Led by our Chief Investment Officer, the Investment Department manages a consolidated investment portfolio of nearly $75 billion and consists of investment professionals focused on portfolio management, risk management, asset management, derivatives, operations, finance and accounting functions.

POSITION SUMMARY

Based in Stamford and reporting to the Head of Loan Portfolio Management within the Commercial Real Estate team, this individual will play a critical role monitoring a $6.2 billion commercial real estate portfolio and focus on providing excellent servicing for our loan portfolio. Primary responsibilities will include assessing and managing borrower loan requests and monitoring loan performance on an individual and portfolio basis. The right candidate will work to ensure GNW’s interests are protected while maintaining quality relationships with our mortgage bankers, borrowers and other members of the commercial real estate investments team.

The position will also help drive team-wide projects and best-in-class processes to ensure a solid platform for continued growth and operational efficiency. The individual should be a team-player and self-starter who is dedicated and motivated to excel.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Analyze, underwrite and close borrower requests, and negotiating loan terms in manner which adheres to GNW’s rigorous risk policies as well as ensuring the terms remain commercially reasonable

  • Review, negotiate and coordinate the satisfactory completion of various types of legal and third party documents with borrowers, legal counsel and third party providers

  • Monitor the financial performance of loans and collateral quality, including: payment of loan principal and interest, payment of taxes, maintenance of insurance and the review of property inspection reports for deferred maintenance issues

  • Follow-up with borrowers and make recommendations as necessary for any changes to risk ratings or watch list designations

  • Manage the team’s comprehensive portfolio reporting, ranging from tracking new business and pricing trends to monitoring portfolio risk-based capital

  • Drive the annual loan valuation process for the portfolio, analyzing property level net cash flow, rent roll and market trend information

  • Coordinate the successful completion of the annual loan valuation process by coordinating information among borrowers, mortgage bankers, origination, senior management and accounting

  • Work with the origination team on new loan underwritings, as needed

  • Assist Head of Loan Portfolio Management and the Head of Commercial Real Estate Group with various ad hoc portfolio and loan analyses as well as special projects

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2-5 years of experience in commercial real estate loan asset management, credit/underwriting, or servicing, preferably within a life insurance company, banking or portfolio lending environment

  • Ability to generate consensus on deal terms among mortgage bankers, borrowers, and legal counsel

  • Experience in reviewing, analyzing and negotiating loan documents and providing well supported recommendations for borrower requests

  • Solid financial analysis background, necessary to interpret operating statements and monitor property performance

  • Must be highly organized and able to multi-task with limited supervision

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to present effectively

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance or Real Estate

  • Advanced proficiency in Word, Excel and Power Point.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters or other advanced degree
